Kiddnation

So today is My Turn Day. it's the day where we're supposed to come forward and announce a public service project we will undertake in 2009. I am very excited about everyone coming to the plate to say "hey, this is my world and I want to pitch in." The reason that really excites me is because it's such a wonderful message to share with my daughters. I want Alexa (6) and Ava (3) to grow up in a better world than what we have today. I want them to reach adulthood and have a different outlook than crusty old me and I want them to be active participants in their communities. My Turn Day not only affords me a chance to something with my kids, but it gives me a reason to open up a dialogue with them about the importance of thinking of others, volunteering and being a helper in the world and their community around them. Having said that, you should know that what I am doing for My Turn Day is something that I am only doing with my six year old, because I think Ava is too small to understand and be of real help.

So here's the plan: Alexa and I went to Home Depot. We purchased some garden green house planters that allow you to see veggies in the house. We bought seeds and we planted. We seeded over 100 new plants: cucumbers, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, onions, carrots, etc. We did this about 3 weeks ago in the office at the house. We've been putting them near the window for sun and watering them every few days. They are growing like crazy (as you can see from the pics on my Kiddnation page). Our plan is to transport the plants to an actual garden that we'll make in our own backyard in about a month, then take care of them and let them grow into a wonderful garden. Alex and I will harvest the veggies and make donations to a food kitchen. I really like this idea because it's not one day of volunteering, but it's an on-going process that keeps her and I working towards a common goal. Plus, I get the fun of growing a garden with my little girl. You should try something like this... a family bonding project with a higher purpose. That's my My Turn Day. Now, it's Your Turn.
