Big Al’s Blog: Career day

Oh My God. It had been a little while since I had done a career day event but if I remember correctly, it was a deal where 4 or 5 of us would be in front of a group of students and tell who we were and what we did and then we would answer questions from the students. Well, the career day that I was a part of on Friday was everything but that, and I was terrible.

big-al-blog-pic-111714I don’t think that any 2 (consecutive) sentences that came out of my mouth actually went together. It was me at the helm of a class of about 30 kids. They were 7th and 8th graders. I started off ok telling who I was and what I did and somehow it transitioned into the “ham” story, which is a pretty complicated, convoluted story for adults… But trying to translate that in a way that it made sense to 13 year olds was very difficult for me to say the least. Let me just say that the kids were some of the most polite and well-mannered and even well dressed that I had ever seen. Even as I struggled, they did not let me know that they were confused or bored by my “speech.”They clearly did their part. Public speaking is something that I, as a radio personality, should be good at…NOPE! You know how people say stuff like, “if I got through to just one kid, it was all worth it.” In my case, “if I got through to one kid, it’s a miracle.” I rambled on and on and then, I went home.
