Big Al’s Blog: Don’t let my first Charity Event Be a Flop!

Man, Kellie was right when she said this a long time ago! Charity is hard work. I have worked with Kidd’s Kids for a long time but I have to be honest. All I really do is show up and play with the kids. I’m really not involved at all in the behind the scenes stuff.

habitat-for-humanityEvery since Kidd passed away, it has been on my heart more and more to do stuff for others. He spent so much time and effort with Kidd’s Kids and I want to do “Something” too! So at the first part of this year, I decided that I wanted to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Ok, I know what you’re saying…BIG AL, You can’t build a house. You are right! But, I can try to raise enough money so that a house can be built and the after the money is raised, I can get some friends together and we can use a hammer, nails, drill, and a few other things to try to make it happen. So, I decided to repeat an event that I did last year for Habitat. It was a Rock Paper Scissor tournament. But this time, instead of doing one event at my bar, I wanted to make it bigger. I wanted to do this event in a few other cities as well. Here is where the Hard part comes in. I had no idea how much work this would be to get this done. So, I REPEAT… Charity is HARD WORK!

There are so many things to be done. First thing is the dates of these events. Then, which cities will be involved? Then, when that is determined, where specifically in those cities will the events be held? Then, who is going to work these events? How do I make sure people attend? How do you put this all together? Dude, this has taken on a life of its own and this is just the first of Five events and it’s happening this Saturday in Longview, Texas. I’m actually shaking my head as I type this. I have a “to-do” list that is a mile long. What have I gotten myself into? Honestly, I don’t know. But here’s what I do know. Its going to happen!

1) The gates open at noon.

2) Live bands will perform at 2p, 4p, and 6p

3) The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders will sign autographs from 3-6p

4) The Rock Paper Scissor tournament will begin at 7p hosted by Me

5) There will be a food truck

6) There will be a BBQ Grill

7) Our radio affiliate in Longview will broadcast from the event

8) Habitat people will be there

9) There will be no face painting…sorry kids!

So that all sounds good but here is the problem. The goal is to raise $10,000 at each event by the 64 teams that (Hopefully) sign up to play Rock Paper Scissors. As of now, 4 teams have signed up to play. LET US PRAY: Please Lord, Don’t let my first Charity Event Be a Flop! And please Lord, Be Safe!
