The nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards are out. Rihanna and Drake are tied for the most nominations with five each. Katy Perry is right behind with four. Both Drake and Rihanna earned a nomination for Video of the Year — “Take Care” for Drake, which features Rihanna, and “We Found Love” for Rihanna. Also up for Video of the Year, Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake,” M.I.A. for “Bad Girls,” and Gotye with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” The VMAs will air September 6. The host hasn’t been chosen, but we know that Alicia Keys and One Direction are scheduled to perform. And we’re all excited to see if Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will be on stage together. They’re scheduled to co-present some award as they’re promoting the last “Twilight” movie.

Bret Michaels is back on the market, ladies! He and his longtime girlfriend/baby mama, Kristi Gibson, have called off their engagement. His rep says they’re still great friends and are committing to raising their daughters, 12-year-old Raine and 7-year-old Jorja, together. After dating for 16 years, Bret finally popped the question a year and a half ago. Cameras were rolling. It was broadcast on the series finale of “Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It.” He was nudged into proposing after suffering an emergency appendectomy and surviving a brain hemorrhage and a stroke.

Katy Holmes set up house in NYC before she filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. And now that she has sole custody and plans to raise her daughter there, Tom is looking for a home that will put him close enough to Suri’s new home in Chelsea, yet give him the privacy he craves. Tom is said to be interested in a waterfront estate in Snedens Landing, which had a 13,500-square-foot mansion sitting on 11 acres. The home is not listed for sale, but it’s said to be worth $13.5 million. His potential neighbors would include Al Pacino and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

This could be a taste of what “American Idol” producers have to look forward to. Mariah Carey was appearing at a charity event for Russell Simmons at his home in East Hampton Saturday. But Mariah wasn’t really happy with the way she was looking that night and didn’t want any camera closeups on her face. So when it was time for her to appear on stage, she insisted that all the big screens be switched off. So who would want to sit next to this diva on the “Idol” judges panel? Not Toby Keith. He reportedly turned down the offer and now producers are talking to Brad Paisley. We hear they’re also talking to Nick Jonas and Pharrell Williams about filling that third seat.

Robert Pattinson moved out of the house he shared with Kristen Stewart and kicked her out, too. And Robert told her that she could take the cat, but the dog stays with him. These two adopted the dog they named Bear from a high-kill shelter in New Orleans and Kristen nursed Bear through a nasty battle with parvo. But Robert says since Kristen’s the one who cheated, he gets to decide where Bear goes. Kristen is hoping he’ll agree to joint custody. We shall see. Meantime, both Kristen and this director Rupert Sanders are saying they just kissed and fooled around for 5 or 6 months but they never went all the way. Robert’s not buying it for a second, but Rupert’s wife might be. He was photographed walking around LA yesterday and he was wearing his wedding ring………..
