Box office weekend… TV streaming news… Shania Twain is partnering with Gavin DeGraw… Joey Chestnut vs Takeru Kobayashi… and Jax Taylor with a message

Traditionally, Labor Day weekend isn’t a huge weekend for theaters, and this year was no exception. Deadpool & Wolverine is still No. 1, earning another $19.5M over the 4-day weekend. This movie has now earned over $603M domestically — and according to Deadline — that makes this the 16th movie in history to do so, not adjusted for inflation. Coming in second was Alien: Romulus, with another $9.3M, and then it was a battle for third. After the dust settled, It Ends With Us barely held on to that spot with $7.42M. The new movie Reagan, inexplicably starring Dennis Quaid as my favorite president ever, debuted in fourth with $7.4M. Critics hate it. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics have given it only 19% positive reviews, but their audience score is 98% positive. And its audience CinemaScore is a solid A. And after 7 weeks, Twisters landed in fifth with $7.1M. Also over the weekend, Inside Out 2 grossed over $1.67B globally, overtaking 2019’s The Lion King to become the 9th biggest movie EVER.

In sequel news, the first two episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place are set to premiere on the Disney Channel Oct. 29, with the first 8 episodes available the next day on Disney+ and Disney Channel On Demand. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place follows an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his wife, Giada, and their kids, Roman and Milo. When Justin’s sister Alex brings a wizard-in-training named Billie to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor Billie while simultaneously juggling his everyday responsibilities and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World. It’s a lot to put on one retired wizard’s plate. We also learned over the weekend that Disney Channel alums Raven-Symoné and Danielle Fishel are directing some episodes in Season 1. In other news, a One Tree Hill sequel is in the works at Netflix, with Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan returning as Brooke and Peyton. No word yet if any other cast members from the original series will appear, but one person who most definitely WON’T be involved is original creator Mark Schwahn. Years after the show ended, Mark was accused of sexual harassment and other vile behavior, claims backed up by both Sophia and Hilarie.

Gavin DeGraw was the opening act for a string of Shania Twain’s shows back in 2015. They must’ve really hit it off, because now Shania is partnering with Gavin to rebrand of his Nashville Underground joint on Lower Broadway. Gavin and his brother opened the 5-story bar in 2018, and it’s morphed into more of a nightclub over the years. We have no other details for now, but we’re making Al contact Gavin to get us invited to the grand re-opening.

For the first time in 15 years, Joey Chestnut faced off against Kobayashi in a Netflix special called Unfinished Beef. Live from Las Vegas, Joey and Kobayashi shoved hot dogs down their throats for 10 solid minutes. After the last swallow, Joey was the undisputed champ, eating 83 hot dogs compared to 66 for Kobayashi. The special was co-hosted by Nikki Bella — her first public appearance since the arrest of her husband Artem Chigvintsev on Thursday. According to TMZ, Artem called 911 claiming Nikki had thrown shoes at him and requested medical assistance, but then he changed his mind and asked them not to come. But authorities did come, and Artem ended up being placed under arrest for corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant.

He made false promises on The Valley, but maybe filing for divorce made Jax Taylor finally realized Brittany was serious about him getting help with his anger issues or else. Jax posted on Instagram yesterday, “A little over a month ago, I checked into an intensive inpatient treatment facility scared of the unknown and what I would find out about myself. After many years of knowing something was wrong but not knowing exactly what it was, I recently learned that I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and PTSD. It’s been a lot to process and an emotional time for me, however I’ve come home to my son with a new found sense of peace. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared for the future but my focus is just trying to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday. Mental health is a lifelong battle of not letting it control you but rather you learning to control it. Thank you everyone who has reached out in support and who also shared their own personal struggles with me. Your messages have helped me more than you know.” When someone asked in the comments, “ptsd from what can I ask,” Jax responded, “losing my mother and father.” Brittany hasn’t appeared to have liked or commented at this point.
