People’s Choice Awards 2021 winners… Jussie’s request obliged… Nicki Minaj’s birthday… Tristan Thompson wants gag order… and “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” aired

Kenan Thompson hosted the People’s Choice Awards last night. These awards are voted on by the people and not industry insiders or fellow actors, so the results are way different than what you’ll see at the Oscars or the Emmys. The people chose “Black Widow” as their overall favorite movie of 2021. Breaking it down into categories, favorite comedy was “Free Guy”; favorite action movie was “Shang-Chi”; favorite drama movie was “Cruella”; and favorite family movie was “Luca.” They broke down all the acting categories, as well, but overall, the people love to see Dwayne Johnson and Scarlett Johansson on the big screen. As far as television, the best show of the year went to “Loki.” Favorite drama was “Grey’s Anatomy.” Favorite comedy was Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.” Favorite reality show was the final season of E’s version of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” with Khloe winning favorite reality TV star. “The Voice” won favorite competition show. And your favorite overall TV stars are Tom Hiddleston and Elle Pompeo. The people threw Ellen DeGeneres a bone and gave her favorite daytime talk show. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is the favorite at night. In the world of music, Lil Nas X and Adele won favorite male and female artists. BTS won favorite group and favorite song and music video for “Butter.” Olivia Rodrigo won favorite new artist and album of the year for “Sour.”

Jussie Smollett was on the stand yesterday in his trial on if he made false police reports about being beaten up in a racist attack three years ago. Jussie stopped prosecutor Dan Webb, who’s white, during his line of questioning during cross-examination yesterday. Jussie asked the prosecutor to stop saying the N-word while quoting messages Jussie sent the Osundairo brothers on the day of the alleged attack. Jussie said, “Can you spell or say the n-word out of respect for every African American in this room? You’ve been saying that word a lot.” The prosecutor asked Jussie to read the messages himself, which he did. After cross, Jussie stepped down and the defense rested its case. Closing arguments are expected to begin today.

On December 8, 1982, Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty was born in Saint James, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. We now know her as Nicki Minaj. In 2010, Nicki released “Pink Friday,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard 200. Nicki released the video for “Super Bass” on May 5, 2011, and in honor of her 39th birthday today, her fans are hoping to have that video reach 1 BILLION views. They have a good way to go to make that happen. As of 9am Central, the video was still shy of 916M.

Tristan Thompson is requesting an emergency hearing to slap a gag order on the woman who claims to have just given birth to his third child. Maralee Nichols delivered a baby boy last week, but like all celebrities and wannabe celebrities, she’s holding off on giving up the name. Maralee has released private Snapchat messages between her and Tristan, where he appears to tell her he will never be a part of the child’s life and offers her $75K to get an abortion and go away. But Tristan denies sending the messages and has now filed this emergency gag order request in Houston — which is where the baby was conceived — to prevent Maralee from saying anything else publicly while they resolve the paternity issues. Tristan claims Maralee violated a previous court ruling that her lawsuit against him remain confidential and he’s now suffered “damages and distress” because of it.

“Live in Front of a Studio Audience” really WAS live! Before diving in to episodes from classic sitcoms he created, Norman Lear dropped an F-bomb, but we forgive him because he’s 99. First up was a recreation of an episode from “Facts of Life,” with Lisa Whelchel — the original Blair— singing the show’s theme song! Surprise guests included Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Jon Stewart. And as Blair, Jennifer Aniston gave a little nod to “Friends” with her final line of the episode, telling Jon’s character, “I’ll be there for you.” For “Diff’rent Strokes,” Kevin Hart was hilarious as Arnold Jackson and Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance as Willis’ friend, Vernon. And one of the most fun parts of the night was seeing Alfonso Ribeiro in retro ads for Oscar Mayer weiners, Heinz ketchup and Kool-Aid.
