Weekend box office news… Kobe Bryant to retire after this season… Celebrity breakups… Ice-T and Coco welcome baby girl… and Mary-Kate Olsen marries Olivier Sarkozy
“Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” is still number one, taking in another $51.6 million over the Thanksgiving weekend. “The Good Dinosaur” was second with $39.2 million. And the new “Rocky” spinoff “Creed” was third with $30.1 million.
Kobe Bryant has announced that this is it. He released a statement Sunday saying that this — his 20th season with the Lakers — will be his last. He wrote a beautiful “breakup” letter to basketball, which was posted on The Players Tribune:
From the moment
I started rolling my dad’s tube socks
And shooting imaginary
In the Great Western Forum
I knew one thing was real:
I fell in love with you.
A love so deep I gave you my all –
From my mind & body
To my spirit & soul
As a six-year-old boy
Deeply in love with you
I never saw the end of the tunnel.
I only saw myself
Running out of one.
And so I ran.
I ran up and down every court
After every loose ball for you.
You asked for my hustle
I gave you my heart
Because it came with so much more.
I played through the sweat and hurt
Not because challenge called me
But because YOU called me.
I did everything for YOU
Because that’s what you do
When someone makes you feel as
Alive as you’ve made me feel.
You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.
And that’s OK.
I’m ready to let you go.
I want you to know now
So we both can savor every moment we have
The good and the bad.
We have given each other
All that we have.
And we both know, no matter what I do next
I’ll always be that kid
With the rolled up socks
Garbage can in the corner
:05 seconds on the clock
Ball in my hands.
5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1
Love you always,
Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid have split after a year-and-a-half engagement. Hollywood Life says the couple had been in counseling because they were fighting a lot about everything, but Johnny is the one who decided he wanted to separate. A source says Courteney is devastated. And after less than 2 months of dating, Tim Tebow and Olivia Culpo are done. A source told the Daily News that she dumped him because of his commitment to abstinence, but E! is reporting that the split had nothing to do with that.
Ice-T and Coco weren’t expecting their baby girl for a few more weeks, but Chanel Nicole couldn’t wait a minute longer. She arrived on Saturday, at a healthy 5.7 pounds and 18 inches. Mama already set up an Instagram for baby girl — @babychanelnicole — and she has close to 100K followers in her first two days on earth. And what a surprise to see a baby bump on Anne Hathaway! Her belly made the announcement for her as she and her husband Adam Shulman took a walk together. She looks to be about five months along.
Mary-Kate Olsen finally married that French guy Olivier Sarkozy at a private home in Manhattan Friday night. She’s 29; he’s 46. This is her first marriage and his second. A source at the wedding says about 50 guests had to check their cell phones before gathering in the rear garden of the home for the ceremony. Then they all went inside for dinner, where the centerpieces were “bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night.”
