‘Parasite’ Made History at the Oscars

Weekend box office news… Prince Harry & Meghan Markle in Miami… Camila Cabello as ‘Cinderella’… Florida Georgia Line announcement… ‘Parasite’ made history at the Oscars

Even though the Harley Quinn movie “Birds of Prey” opened in first place, it was still a bit of a disappointment. The movie had a budget close to $100M, and the studio was expecting it to take in somewhere between $45M-$60M in its opening weekend. Instead, it only earned $33.3M, so it’s got a long way to go. Coming in second was “Bad Boys for Life” with $12M. “1917” was third with $9M, followed by “Dolittle” with $6.7M and “Jumanji: The Next Level” with $5.5M.

Last week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance in Miami at a JP Morgan event. The event was described as a summit, and a number of charitable organizations were featured. Harry wasn’t the keynote speaker, but he did speak. A source says he spoke about being in therapy for the past 3 years, dealing with the trauma of losing his mother at the age of 12. Meghan did not speak. She was just there to support her man and shake some hands. Event organizers refused to say whether Harry and Meghan were paid to be there, but “The Times” in London says they reportedly earned $1M.

Camila Cabello is starring in a new “Cinderella” movie, which is being produced by James Corden. Of course, James cast himself! He’ll play one of the mice, alongside comedian John Mulaney. The wicked stepmother is being played by Idina Menzel, and her two daughters — Cinderella’s mean stepsisters — are being played by Maddie Baillio, who you may remember from “Hairspray Live!” on NBC. She played Tracy Turnblad. The other sister is being played by Charlotte Spencer, whose done a lot of theater and was the voice of Angelina Ballerina. The Prince is Nicholas Galitzine, who we’ll get to know better soon. He’s starring alongside Uma Thurman in the upcoming Netflix series, “Chambers.” His parents — the King and Queen — are being portrayed by Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver. And the town crier is Missy Elliott.

Get ready, y’all! Florida Georgia Line announced on Instagram yesterday that the country remix of Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” is coming on February 19. Along with that announcement, they posted a silent video of them bopping around the recording studio, and we have to assume it’s to the remix. This must be real because they hashtagged it, #itsreallyhappening and they tagged Justin. Justin’s new album “Changes” comes out on Valentine’s Day.

“Parasite” won the Oscars. Literally. The movie took Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film and Best Picture, and that right there was a history-making moment. “Parasite” is the first movie to win both Best International Feature and Best Picture in the same year. The whole crew went on stage to accept for Best Picture, but when the lights started to dim before the executive producer Miky Lee could say a few words, the audience revolted! Charlize Theron and Tom Hanks were leading the chant, “Up! Up! Up! Up!” until the house lights came back up and Ms. Lee could continue. For the big acting awards, Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood.” This is his first acting Oscar. He won his first as a producer of “12 Years a Slave.” Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress in “Marriage Story.” This is not only Laura’s first Oscar, she’s the first actor to win an Oscar for a Netflix film. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for playing Joker, which was also his first Oscar. And Renee Zellweger won Best Actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the movie “Judy.” This is Renee’s second Oscar. She won Best Supporting Actress for “Cold Mountain.”
