Showbiz Top 5: Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead

Box office news over the weekend… Kevin Jonas’ baby girl was born… Sharknado will attack again… One Direction is preparing for “Where We Are” tour… and Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead

With the Super Bowl on Sunday, you kinda assumed it was going to be a weak box office over the weekend. Even though it only earned $12.3 million, it was enough to make “Ride Along” number one for the third straight week. So far, the Ice Cube and Kevin Hart comedy has earned $493 million. The number two spot went to Disney’s “Frozen,” with $9.3 million. Over $2 million of that came from the sing-along version that was shown on 2000 screens. And coming in third was the new Zac Efron romantic comedy, “That Awkward Moment.” It earned $9 million, for one of the lowest Super Bowl weekend debuts in years. The only other new movie to land in the top ten was “Labor Day” starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. It came in seventh with a disappointing $5.3 million.

Kevin Jonas was too busy watching his baby girl being born to catch the Super Bowl yesterday. He and his wife Danielle welcomed their first child, Alena Rose Jonas. The couple let their fans follow along the whole pregnancy journey with them, from finding out the sex of the baby to push time.

Sharknado 2:  The Second One” is actually happening, people! And yes, Ian Ziering and Tara Reid have signed on, only this time, I bet there’s an extra zero on both of their checks. This time, sharks will attack New York City, hitting all of the landmarks along the ride. But we have to wait until July to see this masterpiece on Syfy.

One Direction is preparing for their 88-date “Where We Are” tour. They’re the first act to perform three consecutive nights at the 95K-seat Rose Bowl, and — this interesting tidbit — they are set to earn the band a record $1 billion. That would top the $730 million record set by U2 for their 360° tour. 1D already set another record. They were the first group to debut at number one in the US with their first three albums. Meantime, Harry Styles turn the big 2-0 on Saturday. He reportedly spent it with his girlfriend Kendall Jenner at her home in Malibu.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and his longtime girlfriend, Mimi O’Donnell, broke up in October and he rented an apartment in Greenwich Village. They had three children together, 10-year-old Cooper, 7-year-old Tallulah, and 5-year-old Willa. He was supposed to pick up his kids for a visit yesterday morning, but when he didn’t show up, Mimi called his close friend, playwright David Bar Katz, and asked him to go check on Philip. About 11:30am, David found Philip on the floor of his bathroom, with a needle in his arm and what appeared to be an envelope of heroin. Police say several envelopes marked “Ace of Hearts” were found in the apartment. They are no investigating to see whether the heroin was laced with fentanyl — a very powerful painkiller. Just last May, Philip underwent drug detox treatment for substances, including heroin. He had battled addiction in his early 20s but got clean and remained sober for 23 years before he relapsed.
