R.I.P Rich Homie Quan… TV streaming news… Movie happenings… Anna Delvey explains… and Shakira posts an open letter
Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan — whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar — passed away at his home yesterday. He was only 34. TMZ got a copy of the 911 call his very distraught girlfriend made after realizing he was dead. Amber Williams told the operator that Dequantes fell asleep on the couch the night before and was still there when she woke up the next morning. Assuming he was fast asleep, she put a blanket over him and left to take their son to school. When she came home, Amber told the dispatcher that checked on him again and realized he wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a heartbeat. The cause of death is not known, but an autopsy is scheduled for today.

In TV news – we’ve got ‘em coming and going. Let’s start with coming. We’re only a couple episodes into Season 4 and Hulu has renewed Only Murders in the Building for Season 5. Also coming, Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen will star in a new series for Paramount+ series based on the JonBenét Ramsey case. Melissa and Clive will play JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. The series will explore the tragic 1996 murder of the 6-year-old beauty queen, who was found dead in her family’s basement. The media and public scrutiny was intense, with mom, dad, and JonBenet’s brother all being accused at one point of being guilty. But after all these years, the murder remains unsolved. There is no release date for the limited series just yet, but it seems likely that this will come out in 2026, which will be the 30th anniversary of JonBenét’s death. Now for what’s going — Deadline reports that the upcoming fifth season of Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star will be its last. The first of its final 12 episodes kick off on Sept. 23.

In movie news….It’s been 36 years (!!) since the original, but Winona Rider and Michael Keaton — who prefers to go by his birth name Michael Douglas from now on — are back for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The movie was previewed in some theaters the past couple nights, already earning $12M heading into its opening weekend. Experts have projected that it will earn around $100M, making it one of the biggest September debuts of all time. It helps that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has the widest US release this year, playing in 4500 theaters, including all the premium formats, which adds an extra punch to the box office total. In other news, Brad Pitt and George Clooney just debuted their new thriller comedy Wolfs at the Venice International Film Festival. It’s scheduled to receive a limited theatrical release in the US on September 20, before it begins streaming on Apple TV+ one week later. While they’re busy promoting Wolfs, Brad and George are reportedly in talks to do another Ocean’s Eleven sequel — Ocean’s 14. It’s in the VERY early stages with ZERO confirmed, so we have not idea if Matt Damon or Julia Roberts or Casey Affleck are even interested.
‘BEETLEJUICE 2’ earned $12M from Thursday previews at the domestic box office — the 2nd best of ALL TIME for a September release.

Producers made the controversial decision to bring on convicted con artist Anna Delvey for the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars. Anna has been under house arrest in New York since being released from prison. She had to request special permission from ICE to travel to LA for filming. It took about 10 days to get it all sorted out, but she eventually got the green light. However, Anna is required to dance while wearing her ankle monitor.

For five years, Shakira maintained that she was innocent of owing Spain $15.8M in back taxes. But on the first day of her fraud trail back in November, Shakira struck a deal with the Spanish government to pay back $7.6M of what they claimed she owed, avoiding the risk of going to prison. She’s kept quiet about her decision until now. In an open letter to the Spanish newspaper el Mundo, Shakira explained that she stuck the deal to protect her sons. She wrote, “I want to leave my children the legacy of a woman who explained her reasons calmly and in her own time, when she considered it necessary, not when she was forced to. I need them to know that I made the decisions I made to protect them, to be by their side and to get on with my life. Not out of cowardice or guilt.” She also accused the Spanish government of creating a story to make it look like she defrauded them, when that was not the case. She claims she was only in Spain in the first place because of her relationship with Gerard Piqué to Spain. But she didn’t live there full time. In 2011, for instance, Shakira said she only spent 73 days in Spain. According to the Spanish government, the minimum amount of days to be considered a tax resident is 183. But Shakira said when she officially moved to Spain in 2015, the government tried to charge her for a decade’s worth of taxes, which she didn’t legally owe. In fact, Shakira claims not only was she was cleared by the IRS, she even paid “much more” than she should have because she agreed to several “unjustified” fines. She concluded her letter, “No one can write my story for me. Just like with my songs, I sing to live peacefully again, to turn the page.” Last year, Shakira relocated with her sons to Miami.
