Listen to “Showbiz – Oct 2, 2023” on Spreaker.
“PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” — the sequel to 2021’s “PAW Patrol: The Movie” — debuted in first place this weekend with $23M. A third movie is already in the works. Look for it in 2026. “Saw X” opened in second with $18M. They only spent $13M to make this one because why not? The franchise has already grossed more than a billion dollars so they know they just have to put something out there and an audience will see it. In fact, the 10th entry in this franchise actually beat the opening weekends for the previous two — 2017’s “Jigsaw” with $16.6M and 2021’s spinoff “Spiral” with $8.7M. The biggest opening of all of them was “Saw III” in 2006 with $33M. Back to this weekend, “The Creator” was budgeted for $80M and opened in third with $14M, way below the studio’s hopes and expectations. Coming in fourth was “The Nun II” with $4.6M and the faith-based biopic “The Blind” finished in fifth with $5M.

On Sept. 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. All these years later, someone has finally been charged in his murder. Two years later, Duane Keith Davis – known as Keffe D in the streets — told BET that he was in the front passenger seat of the car from which the shots were fired, and that the gunman was in the back. And in 2009, Keffe D reportedly confessed to police that he’d had a role in the shooting, but it couldn’t be used as evidence because of a proffer agreement, which allows a suspect to provide potentially useful information in an investigation, but whatever he says can’t be used as evidence against him. Keffe D even wrote a memoir and described the shooting, which was one of the things seized when police raided his home in Vegas several months ago. They also removed computers and photos and other evidence. While police don’t believe Keffe D is the one who pulled the trigger, they do believe he ordered the shooting.

Tom Brady and Kim Kardashian were among the 200 guests at Jay-Z’s all-star blackjack party in Atlantic City, benefitting the Reform Alliance, which is dedicated to probation, parole and sentencing before in the US. This is a cause especially close to Kim’s heart, so her wallet was wide open. In fact, she got into a bidding war with Tom over a painting by George Condo. I’m not familiar with Mr. Condo’s work, so I looked him up. Apparently he’s known for his “distinctive, deformed and sometimes demonic paintings that combine figuration and abstraction.” I don’t want demonic paintings in my home, but Tom and Kim do. And when they each bid $2M, Mr. Condo agreed to create a separate painting for Kim as a commission. Tom also donated the still unwashed jersey he wore when he completed his 700th NFL touchdown in 2021. He also threw in a dinner. That went for $1.2M. The Reform Alliance’s goal for the night was $20M. Jay-Z invited the right 200 because they reportedly donated over $24M.

On Friday, Britney Spears seemed to be in a good place. She was hanging out somewhere beautiful — she didn’t say where — with her friend and manager Cade Hudson, posting about positive affirmations and taking one day at a time as she goes through her divorce. But by Saturday, Britney’s HAD it with her positivity AND with police concerned about her wellness! She posted a photo of a ballerina standing on pointed toes on top of two butcher knives. She captioned it, “So unacceptable for cops to listen to random fans and come in to my home unwarranted … can I make calls and make others feel threatened in your home ??? The officers came to my home and said they would not leave until they spoke to me as people did 4 minute performances with knives. I am getting an apology. I’ve been bullied in my home for so long now…ITS ENOUGH! Don’t talk about it, come on, let’s DO !!! As my mom does the silent treatment when paps ask questions about her own daughter as if I’m in the wrong…nope it’s an old game. People need to be responsible for their actions! It’s about power for cops.” If you remember, the sheriff’s department said the call for a wellness check did NOT come from a fan, but from someone close to Britney. Apparently, she does not believe that. No word if she’s received her apology, either.
On Saturday night, Taylor Swift had another girls night with her usual tribe, but she’s now added a new member to the pack. Joining Taylor, Sophie Turner and Blake Lively for dinner at Emilio’s Ballato in Soho was newest squad member Brittany Mahomes — yes, that’s Patrick’s wife. I’m guessing he was having dinner with Travis and their other teammates at Meduza Mediterrania in the Meatpacking District. Travis showed up at dinner around 9:30pm, and sources swore he was back at the Chiefs’ hotel in NJ by 11pm curfew. But paparazzi caught Travis leaving Taylor’s garage in her black Range Rover around 11am Sunday morning. Maybe he just came over for a pre-game breakfast? Taylor was back in a suite to watch the Chiefs take on the Jets last night, only this time, she brought an even bigger squad. In addition to Sophie, Blake and Brittany were Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Sabrina Carpenter. The Chiefs squeaked out a 23-20 win, by the way. But unlike last Sunday, Travis and Taylor left the stadium separately. He left on the team bus; she left with Sophie.
