Box office weekend… Cuba Gooding Jr. is turning to Christ… ‘Troubled’ Pax Jolie-Pitt still recovering… THE JELLY SLAM… and Zac Efron hospitalized after being found in swimming pool in distress
Deadpool & Wolverine are at the top of the box office for its second weekend, earning another $97M. Twisters came in second in its third weekend with $22.6M, followed by the new M. Night Shyamalan movie Trap, which debuted with $15.6M. Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 rounded out the top five, with $11.2M and $6.7M, respectively. The new movie Harold and the Purple Crayon opened with a thud. This is a live-action/animated movie starring Zachary Levi as a man who uses a magical marker to bring his drawings to life. It cost $40M just to produce and opened with only $6M. Critics hate it, giving it only 28% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes.com. But its audience CinemaScore is an A-, so the studio is hopeful that word of mouth will help get more families in there to see it in these last few weeks of summer.

Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in a new faith-based movie called The Firing Squad. It’s based on a true story about men in an Indonesian prison who accept Christ as their Savior before they’re executed. Some may look at this with a little side-eye, because they remember a couple years ago when Cuba was facing time himself for 6 counts of sexual abuse and forcibly touching women. He ended up taking a plea deal, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor forcible touching charge for non-consensually kissing a woman at a nightclub. As part of that deal, Cuba had to go through treatment for alcohol abuse. Cuba credits faith for getting him through those dark times. And for those who think he’s using Christianity to rehab his tarnished image, Cuba told Extra, “It’s that old saying: you can’t please people every time. But people who want to celebrate artistry, that’s my job and that’s my only mission in life.”

On Friday, TMZ reported that two people working at a villa in Ibiza found Zac Efron in a swimming pool and pulled him out of the water. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment and released the next day. His rep told TMZ it was a “minor swimming incident” and that Zac was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. And just to make sure we all know he’s fine, Zac posted, “Happy and healthy – Thanks for the well wishes” on his IG Story yesterday, along with a shirtless photo of himself doing dumbbell presses on an exercise ball. But how do we know that was a picture from yesterday and not one taken before his “minor swimming incident”?
