Kiddnation

It's finally here! The day we're all being asked to just announce what it is we plan to do to give back -- to help out -- to go outside our comfort zones and do something good with our spare time rather than watch another reality show or surf the internet -- unless, of course, you can figure out how to turn reality TV watching and internet surfing into a charitable deed. If I could, I would! But for My Turn Day, I decided to do something I've always wanted to do but never have -- I'm going to work with an organization that saves animals from being put to sleep and does everything they can to find them loving homes. It's called Paws In The City and once a month, I'll be going to pet adoption drives to walk the animals and give them some attention and encourage people to take a fabulous pet home with them. Of course, the problem I'm already seeing is that I'm going to want to adopt one or more every time I'm out there, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

If you've got a willing spirit but nothing is popping in your head that you feel like you can be passionate about, there's a wonderful website I stumbled across -- in addition to www.myturnday.com, of course -- called www.volunteermatch.org. Just type in your zip code and all sorts of different volunteer opportunities will pop up. I guarantee SOMETHING on there will make your heart go pitter-patter. That's how J-Si found out about the search and rescue dog training. He's literally going to hide from dogs!! We all know J-Si is a 7-year-old boy at heart, so what a perfect combination of doing a good deed while satisfying his need to play hide-and-seek!

So please, just take a couple minutes and look over that website, decide what it is you'd like to do, and then announce it on your Facebook, your MySpace, your KiddNation page, your Twitter...Be a part of something good and selfless for one day and then we can all go back to wallowing in self-pity and darkness. Wait, is that just me?

XO
Kellie

Thank you Kellie for helping with adoptions. Kidd kind of made fun of you like he didn't think it was a big deal. But it is!!! Iam adoption coordinator for Friends For Life Animal Society here in western Oklahoma. We do adoptions the 3rd week of every month at Petsmart in OKC. It is a 2 hour drive with any number of pets to adopt. Believe me, it is hard work!!! When i do adoptions, I do not sit all day, am talking, walking, cleaning up after, filling out app's, telling people they are not the right home, telling others they are, etc etc. Anyway it IS hard work but very rewarding. My Valentines's Day was spent adopting out pets. I left home at 7:30am and got back at 8:pm. But guess what?? I took six dogs and adopted all of them to wonderful homes. One of the best days in a long time. Anyway I am sure you will have a great time and you are doing a WONDERFUL thing!! Hey, anytime you have free time call us, we always need volunteers!!!!! LOL

So instead of working with an organization, I am helping out a couple that I haven't even met. I was recently a part of the "special day giveaway" contest and one of the couples made me want to help out. So with everyones permission I am putting up canisters and taking donations to help them pay for a wedding since thy have so much to deal with now. With having to deal with the treatments and knowing about the cancer itself....I cant imagine how much harder it would be to plan a wedding.

I recently signed up for a "Lunch Buddies" program here at my work. It is where you go to lunch with a kid from a local school once a week. It is getting me in touch with the younger generation and I feel like I am doing some good for this young lady. I don't know if she is helping me more or I am helping her! We have a good time each week, even though it goes by too fast!

What was that website that you went to where it showed you the perfect job for you to do?

Kellie, you're going to be amazed at how good being involved with this is going to make you feel! I've been where you are and last summer we had a little girl in our hometown go through a surgery I had never even heard of. A hemispherectomy, the removal of half of the brain! I could not imagine having that done and being ok. But she definitely is!! Her parents started the Hemispherectomy Foundation and I've been volunteering with them for almost a year. I can't tell you how blessed I feel to be able to be a part of this! It's simply amazing, 130 people registered that have either had or are going to have this surgery. Check out the site, www.hemifoundation.org. Feel better soon!!
