Big Al’s Blog: Ideas are like babies
Big Al’s Blog: Ideas are like babies

Babe Ruth struck out many more times than he hit home runs. Michael Jordan didn’t make the cut the first time he tried out for his varsity basketball team. So, if I have an idea that seemed great in the conception stage, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be great at the implementation stage. And that seems to have been the case with my Naked Cowboy promotion. I mean it seemed like an awesome idea. You come and play a song and do your best rendition of a Naked Cowboy performance. And by the way, I have to send out MAJOR PROPS to the original naked cowboy. I bet when he came up with the idea to stand up in his underwear in the middle of the busiest intersection of the busiest part of the busiest city in the world, and play his guitar every single day, I bet people said that was the craziest idea in the world. I bet his friends and family tried to discourage him. I bet his closest friends didn’t believe he could do it. But he stuck to his guns and gave it his all. And look at him now. World famous.

babiesAnyway, I thought a chance to be a naked cowboy in a different city would be an awesome opportunity and a super fun contest. The winner gets to make all the money that he or she could while using the naked cowboy name and do appearances and even travel to New York to play with the Original Naked Cowboy. Well, another audition night has come and gone and it pains me to report that no one auditioned. Not one person. So, even as fun as this sounded, and as fun as I thought this would be, this idea doesn’t seem to be one that people want to participate in. Ideas are like babies. You want to think that yours is the prettiest and best ever. But let’s face it. ALL babies can’t be the prettiest and best ever! Every once in a while, there is a baby that you look at and say, “Ehh, I bet that baby is going to be really smart.”

I will take a little of the blame here. All promotions are not created equal. I guess you can’t promote a contest like this in the same way that I promote a Coolio Concert or Midget Wrestling.

I need to go back to business and marketing school. Well, I actually, I never really went to school for that. Who knew? But to all of the business people out there and all of the creative people that come up with ideas for whatever reason, don’t stop creating…don’t stop trying new things and ideas. Trust me. When I stop coming up with ideas, it’s over! I’ll take a BAD idea over NO idea any day of the week!
