Big Al’s Blog: How does she do it?

Wow, The conversations that you have with your girlfriend when your girlfriend is a Doctor…??? I went to see her yesterday and she was talking about her cases that she had been involved in earlier and they were some doozies. There were body organs removed, veins replaced, blood clots removed, organs “reinstalled” into the person’s body, bullets removed from the chest…it was enough to make my head spin. I can tell she is trying to “Dumb Down” the procedures that she is talking about so that I can reduce the Glazed Over look that I’m sure that I am giving her as she describes stuff to me. How long can a relationship between a Doctor and a DJ really last? How does she not look at me at the end of any conversation about our days and say, “what the hell am I doing?” she deserves some type of award for being with me for a year and putting up with me.

surgeryMore importantly, How do those Doctors and nurses do it? And how do you detach yourself at the end of the day? I think about how at the end of the day, we are upset if we do or say something on our show and it doesn’t get a laugh or it doesn’t get the desired reaction from the cast and we laugh and move on. And then I think about her job and how if something doesn’t go just right, or sometimes, even if it does go right, a person’s life is in jeopardy. She puts her hands inside bodies and tries to “fix” them. That’s kind of mind blowing when I sit back and think about it. What a great job she has. What a great feeling at the end of the day when you can say that you saved a person’s life! And then there’s the flip side but I prefer to not think about that side of it that she has to go through. Speaking of that, The Kidd’s Kids trip is just over a month away and my girlfriend is going to be in Florida at the same time for a wedding. She may get a chance to drive up to Disney for a day. That will be fun. I’ve never had the chance to share that experience with someone I was dating but I’ve always wanted to. Then, the next week, she and her brother will spend Thanksgiving with my family. I’ve had my girlfriend spend Thanksgiving with my family before but I’ve never had the brother of my girl join us. This will be a first. I guess I’m in charge of most of the prep work this year. Mom will help but I don’t want to put all of that burden on her to make dinner for 10 people. Man, where does time go? It seems like it was just Summer time last week and now I’m talking about Thanksgiving.
