Big Al’s Blog: Never let ‘em see you sweat

When you’re throwing a party/concert in Playa del Carmen,Mexico with the One and Only, Coolio, you need to do a little bit of planning and coordinating. And if you know me at all, you know that I’m not the best at planning and coordinating…This is especially tough when you factor in that out of all the parties and events that I have put together in my long bar owning, party throwing career, this is the first time I have tried to put one together in another country. (And I’m doing most of this planning on a very tight budget and I’m doing it while I’m not there.)

Then, add to that the fact that I have to rent a stage in Mexico, rent sound equipment in Mexico, rent stage lighting in Mexico, build a wall so that people on the street can’t see inside, get a special event permit in Mexico, coordinate rooms and flights and ground transportation for 10 people, get tickets printed, t-shirts, order Coolio Cookbooks for the Meet and Greet, and in a very nice way, try to keep an eye on Coolio to make sure he doesn’t make a turn down the wrong street…People, this has a very HIGH potential for something to go terribly wrong. Not to mention the fact that my mother and sister will be with me in Playa and they have never been to Mexico before.

Oh, and did I mention that the manager of my bar has been in Mexico for exactly 2 weeks. Boy-oh-Boy-oh-Boy…I am stressed. But just like the old deodorant commercial says: Never let ‘em see you sweat! So, my Friday and Saturday were filled with errands…I swear, no American goes to Mexico to run more errands than me. I went to the bank, to the Corona office, met with the sound guy, the stage guy, my manager…ugh…I think the beach is still in Playa…I never got to go.

farrah_alThen, Sunday it was Mothers day so I got up, called mom and then got on my flight to Dallas for the big “Single Mothers Day” promotion at my bar here in the States. Our special guest was Farrah Abraham from “Teen Mom.” And say what you want about the girl, but she was really, really nice. She took pictures with every single person in the bar and talked and talked for as long as each one wanted to talk. Hard to believe she just did a “tape.” I was trying to listen in and see what people were asking her about but it was impossible to hear. But I could only imagine. But I will say this, every time I looked over at her, she was smiling and working the crowd.
Thanks Farrah for being so nice to everyone.
